Betty Jo Flynt

Betty Jo Rippy Flynt was born in Richardson, Texas on December 20, 1927 to Porter Oather Rippy and Annie Jewell Jackson Rippy. Betty passed away on July 25, 2021 in Dallas, Texas. Betty grew up in Richardson and graduated from Richardson High School. She married H. Brooks Flynt in 1948, and they enjoyed 72 years of faithful love and laughter together. Betty and her family moved to Garland in 1954. She worked for Goetz & Company for 30+ years where she was known and respected not only for her excellence as an executive assistant and bookkeeper, but also for her impressive typing skills. She could type 160 wpm on a standard typewriter and 220 wpm on an electric typewriter. Betty was a faithful and beloved member of Axe Memorial United Methodist Church for 67 years. A member of the Two by Two Sunday school class, Betty formed many lifelong friendships that she cherished. She coordinated numerous trips for the Two by Two class and served as the Membership Secretary for the church for over a decade. Betty's hardworking, faithful attitude characterized her wherever she served, whether at home, at the office, or at the church. Betty was known for her hearty laughter, her great storytelling, and her delicious cooking. Any time her mashed potatoes, yeast rolls, pecan pie, or chocolate pound cake made an appearance on the table, everyone rejoiced. Once the table was cleared, the family often enjoyed playing games together and listening to Mamaw tell stories of her childhood and youth in Richardson, of raising her sons, and of church trips and travels with Papaw. She kept a collection of storybooks she loved reading to her grands and great-grands when they visited. Her sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She encouraged, prayed for, and supported her family with wit and wisdom, leaving a legacy of faith, endurance, and resilience. Betty Flynt is preceded in death by her parents; sisters Juanita Sutherland, Dorothy Putnam, and Pauline Reed; brothers Robert (Cecil) Rippy, William Rippy, and Porter Oather Rippy Jr.; and a great grandson, Nathan Johnston. Betty is survived by her husband, H. Brooks Flynt; son, Gary Flynt and wife Nancy; son, Mark Flynt and wife Joan; grandchildren Diana Robinson and husband Troy, Whitney Bietendorf and husband Jason, Abby Patterson and husband Michael, and Taylor Sher and husband Hebron; Joshua Flynt, Amanda Johnston and husband Jimmy; and great grandchildren, Holly and Connor Robinson; Hadley and Kennedy Bietendorf; Julia and Miles Patterson; Milly and Vivian Sher; and Laura and Creed Johnston.
