Quentin Oliver Scruggs

On Thursday, September 12, 2019 Quentin Oliver Scruggs, loving husband, father and active community member passed away peacefully at the Plaza at the Edgemere in Dallas, Texas after a long and very happy life. Quentin was born to John Oliver and Adeline Sims Scruggs in Denison, Texas on October 23, 1919. He was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Scruggs Chadick of Texarkana, TX and brother, John Haskell Scruggs of Staten Island, NY. He served in the US Army CIC during World War II as a communications instructor. He married Rachel Redding on December 14, 1946 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Quentin was a lifetime member of the Garland Masonic Lodge #441, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, a charter member of Monica Park Christian Church in Garland and Elder Emeritus of First Christian Church of Garland. He served on the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army for many years and was an active volunteer for SCORE through the SBA of Dallas. He had a long career as a real estate broker in Garland. Later in life Quentin began a new career in importing antique furniture for over 20 years, traveling around Europe buying for his active trade in Dallas. He also was an avid animal lover and owned many horses, cattle and other livestock during his life. Aside from Rachel, his special love was a horse named Lisa that preceded him in death by 5 years. He was also involved in the Coast Guard Auxiliary at Lake Texoma. Quentin and Rachel lived actively at the Five Star Premier Residences of Dallas for 11 happy years prior to moving to the Edgemere earlier this year. Quentin truly enjoyed every single day of his life and loved his many friends, family and activities. He is survived by his wife Rachel Scruggs, three daughters: Jere Hilton of Middleton, Wisconsin, Charlotte Scruggs Clark of Dallas and Sally Scruggs Isom and husband Clay of Memphis, Tennessee, two granddaughters: Jana Hemphill Palmer and husband Bill; Emily Clark Timon and husband Dr. Steve Timon (Alexandra and Matthew); 3 grandsons, 6 great grandchildren and two nieces, Nancy Chadick Dale and Susan Chadick Miller and other nieces, nephews and a host of long-time friends. Services will be held Friday, September 27, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Garland, Texas followed by a reception at the church, 115 S. Glenbrook Dr., Garland, TX 75040. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Garland, Texas, The Salvation Army or Texas Scottish Rite Children's Hospital.
