Puthenpurayil John Varghese—affectionately known as Babykutty—was
born on March 4, 1946, in Pathanapuram, Kerala, to Yohannan George
and Thankamma Yohannan Pullamkaeril Alummottil family. Raised in a
prayerful Christian home and rooted in the Mappilaveettil
Kudumdayogam lineage of Puthencavu, he grew into a man of integrity,
responsibility, and deep faith in God.
After completing his schooling, he worked briefly in Bangalore with the
goal of enlisting in the military and being close to his brother. However, he
returned home to care for his family when his father unexpectedly became
terminally ill. Following his father’s passing, he assumed full responsibility
for the household. He cared for his mother and faithfully supported his
three sisters.
On July 16, 1979, he married Rachel (Podimol) of the Mavuvila family
from Thuvayoor. Together they built a loving Christian home and raised
three children. He served faithfully in the Assemblies of God church in
Pidavoor and was known for his humility, generosity, and warm presence.
He cared for his elder sister Kunjamma until her passing on March 6, 2000
and later for his mother until she went to be with the Lord at age 94.
In 2002, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He met every
challenge with courage and unwavering faith. In 2014, he immigrated to
the United States with his wife and elder son to Chicago and later settled
in Dallas.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Varghese; his children—Hephzi (Pr. Jay
John) of Dallas, Jipson (Jeena Joseph) of Dallas, and Jaison (Reena
Stephen) of Atlanta; and his grandchildren—Jayden, Steven, Jianna, and
Jonathan. He is also survived by his sisters Kunjannamma John (Pr. E.
John Philip) & Mercy Thomas (Ninan Thomas).
He was preceded in death by his brother Pr. P. J. John (Late Suzy John) &
his sister P. J. Kunjamma.
P. J. Varghese entered the eternal presence of the Lord on December 7,
2025 at 5:20PM. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and steadfast
devotion to family.
