James Wood

James “Jim” William Wood, age 72, passed away Thursday, June 15 at the Methodist Hospital in Richardson, Texas. He was born December 26, 1950 in Fort Worth, Texas to Delmer Joe Wood “Joe” and Christine Laverne (Grant) Wood. He was a 1969 graduate of Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth, Texas and received an Associate’s from Tarrant County College in 1972. He received his Bachelor’s from ACU campus located then in Mesquite Texas in 1977. Jim continued his love for learning and enjoyed working and staying busy. His first job was throwing papers from his bicycle. He worked at a gas station and then worked jobs in grocery. Jim has been a lifetime member of the Church of Christ. His first church home was with Flamingo Road in Fort Worth. He then attended Kennedale Church of Christ. Jim married Pamela Jean Roberts on a Tuesday, February 29th , 1972 at the Kennedale Church of Christ. He always thought he’d like to get married on leap year and had 51 years and 12 calendar anniversaries together. They made their home in Garland, Texas where Jim was then employed as a Jail Guard for the Garland Police Department. He became a Garland Police Officer and retired in 2005 with 33 years with the GPD. Jim was known as Woody and Tweety to his Police Family. Jim was Santa for GPD Christmas Parties and you may have seen him as McGruff, the Crime Fighting Dog, in Parades or a school PTA meeting. Jim trained to compete in the Boxing event called Guns & Hoses. Jim loved cars and had an old police car that he raced in the Beat the Heat Program. He enjoyed motorcycle trips and hiked the Apalacian Trails with his friends from the PD. Jim liked to keep busy and went to work with at the District Attorney’s Office in Dallas just days after retiring with the GPD. He worked there for almost 15 years. He worked in several divisions in the court system. Jim & Pam worshiped with the members at Casa View Church of Christ located in Mesquite (now known as Meadowview) for two years then placed membership in their home town of Garland at the Saturn Road Church of Christ where they attended for almost 50 years. Jim and his wife, Pam enjoyed best the things they were able to do together for the Lord. They met on a mission trip to Mexico while still in High School. They were chaperones and door knockers on a Campaign for Christ with the youth group in 1975. They did the marque sign, and fixed communion for worship. He drove the church bus for over 10 years picking up ladies from Nexus to bring to bible class and worship. He taught Bible Class, taught Bible Hour where he might appear as Mr. Magic, involved in Friend Speak, he was a deacon, bible class teacher, visited Preschool in his Police uniform, finger printed young children, Safety Team Leader, Care Play Read, blood drive coordinator and donor, picked up elderly in church van, VBS, Trunk or Treat. He looked forward to attending Men’s Bible Class, Better Men, and 49ers and Men’s Prayer Breakfast. Jim loved his wife, kids, and grandkids. Jim and Pam had 3 children, Rebecca Wood, Benson Wood (wife, Christina), and Sally (Wood/Pace) McCandless and 6 grandchildren, Hannah Pace, David Pace, Nolan McCandless, and William, Caleb, and Claire Wood. Jim is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren; sisters Helen (Wood) Shepard, and her husband Mike; Shirley (Wood) Hunt, and her husband Phil. Mother-in-law, Phyllis Roberts, Brother-in-law, Bobby Eugene Roberts. Jim was Uncle Jimmy to Tracy, Scotty, Wesley, Christy, Michelle, Callie, Wendy, Katie, Jesse, and Lucas. He loved his family and was a kind, good man and a loving, patient husband, respectful son-in-law, loving father, proud grandfather, best brother, and faithful friend. Jim enjoyed playing pickle ball, watching his cowboy shows early in the morning, his time with the grandkids, traveling, Star Trek, playing Chess with his grandson, making Christmas cookies with the grandkids, playing cards and board games with friends, working on cars, trips, decorating the yard with gnomes, and helping others. We’re going to miss him so much…..
