Betty McCarthy Frizzell

Betty Jane McCarthy was born in Covington, Kentucky on August 13, 1934 to parents Martha Cornett and Lawrence A. McCarthy.  She was the middle child and had two brothers, Lawrence and Michael.  She looked up to her older brother Lawrence who was very protective of Betty. Betty wasn’t especially fond of school, so Lawrence jokingly nicknamed her “schoolie.” She was also one of the fastest runners in the neighborhood and earned the nickname “B-tracks.” Betty doted on her baby brother Michael. She loved to take him everywhere and never got over his death at 32 years old.

Betty grew up in Miami, Florida and spent her high school years on the Miami Dade HS Cheerleading squad. She loved to tell her family about performing during half-time at football games in the Orange Bowl.

Betty’s family eventually moved to Chicago where she met “the love of her life and soulmate” Boyd Delbert (Del) Frizzell.  Betty says Del was interested in her first, and after repeated requests to take her out, she finally agreed. They were married December 23rd, 1954 and had five children-Boyd Junior (Little Del), Michael. Sheryl, Charles (Chuck) and Todd.

Job opportunities took Betty and Del back to Florida where they lived for nearly 15 years.  They finally settled in Garland, Texas and made it their permanent home.

Betty raised 5 children and loved being a wife and mother.  She loved country music and most everything her kids were involved in. Betty was a cool mom.  She loved to see her sons Chuck and Todd play live music with their bands.  Everybody knew Betty would be front and center, dancing with arms in the air, cheering for her boys-even into her 80’s.

Once Betty’s youngest son was of school age, she joined the workforce.  Betty quickly rose through the ranks at the Days Inn Corporate office and later the Cable Company where she was a supervisor and manager.

Betty was always active.  You could find her wallpapering her house or putting a fresh coat of paint in the living room.  She made the best Easter dinner and never missed giving Chuck a pineapple upside down cake (his favorite) on his birthday. Although Betty was small in stature, she could eat anyone under the table. It was a family joke that Betty could eat 37 shrimp when Red Lobster ran their “All you can eat Shrimp” promotion. Betty loved watching wrestling and Smack down on Friday nights. She loved the Dallas Cowboys. Her favorite player was Ezekiel Elliot and she would wear his jersey during all games. Betty loved animals, especially the family dog, Gibson whom she called “Moo Moo.”

Betty always had a smile. In fact, nursing staff would comment how Betty would smile at them even though she was being prodded and poked with needles.

Betty was preceeded in death by her husband, Boyd Delbert Frizzell, parents, Martha Cornett and Lawrence A. McCarthy, brother Michael McCarthy and son Boyd Frizzell Junior.

Betty is survived by son Michael Frizzell, son Charles Frizzell (Dena), Daughter Sheryl Nowicki, son Todd Frizzell (Lisa) and 11 grandchildren Joshua, Charlie, Haley, Boyd, Kristin, Rheanna, Chalene, Kambrie, Brandon, Jesse and Daniel,  as well as 15 great grandchildren.

Betty’s journey with us has come to an end.  She stayed as long as she could and always told everyone that she loved them.  She will be greatly missed, but the family takes comfort knowing they will see her again.

Condolences

Betty always made me feel welcomed and special. I was at their house more than my own in the 80's hanging out with Todd and Chuck. She was always hospitable and nice. You were never going hungry in that house either. Some of my very favorite memories are times spent with the Frizzell family. Later in life, anytime I saw her she would let me know how much she appreciated me "protecting Todd during his formative years" I love you guys.

Grandma always had a smile on her face. I'm gonna miss how she would just light up on sight. I'm thankful for her being around in pivotal moments of my life. From first day of school, to high school prom, graduation. She was there for it all. Until we meet again grandma
