Nick Frank Musso, Sr. was born the youngest of 4 children to Frank and Mary Musso on April 16, 1930 in Dallas, Texas. He passed away on June 16, 2019. Nick was raised in Dallas, where he attended Crozier Tech High School and was on the 1948 state championship basketball team, scoring the wining points in the last seconds of the game. In 1949 he joined the Army National Guard where he served until being honorably discharged in 1961 with the rank of Second Lieutenant. After high school he attended the University of Texas at Austin and North Texas State University, but in 1948 he had met the love of his life, JoAnn Johnston, and they were married at Sacred Heart Cathedral on May 31, 1951. Nick and JoAnn have two children, Nick and Cathy. Nick was a founding member of St. Pius X Parish in Dallas and coached basketball there for more than 10 years. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 799 as well as belonging to St. Patrick's and St. Thomas Aquinas Parishes. Nick worked as manager of the Technical Services Division at Mobil Oil Corporation from which he retired after 30 years. After "retirement" he went on to work for 10 years with the Southland Corporation and then worked part-time at St. Patrick's Parish until illness forced him to retire in the fall of last year. Nick spent his life in service to God, his Church and, most of all, his family and friends. Over the years he sponsored numerous converts to the Church in the RCIA program and served as an extraordinary minister of the Holy Eucharist. He was exceedingly devoted to St. Anthony of Padua who, for generations has been, and remains, the patron of our family. We will probably remember him most for his love and dedication to his family. Having grown up with the influences of a strong Italian family, he passed that down to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There is nothing he would not have done or sacrificed for his family. He was compassionate and considerate beyond words; always available, always there for someone in need. He was a humble man who didn't like to draw attention to himself, usually declining to take credit for so many of his good works. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren all called him "Papa", and Papa loved to cook for his family. Everyone will miss his pasta and meatball dinners, always served in quantities that could feed an army! Mostly, his gentleness, his kindness, and his wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank Musso and Mary Pinola Musso, brother Ross Musso, and sisters Nora Musso Cook and Pauline Musso Harvey. Nick is survived by his wife of 68 years, JoAnn Musso; daughter, Cathy Musso Smith; son, Nick Musso, Jr., (Gerri Musso); grandchildren, Nicole Musso Taylor, (John Taylor), Anthony Musso, Loren Musso Mims (Josh Mims), Amber Smith, Catey Smith, Cole Ross Smith; great-grandchildren Gianna Taylor and Quentin Taylor. The Holy Rosary will be recited on Sunday, June 23rd at 3:00 pm at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 9643 Ferndale Dr., Dallas, TX 75238. Reception to follow. Funeral Mass will be on Monday, June 24th at 10 am at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 6306 Kenwood Ave., Dallas, TX 75214. Reception to follow Mass with interment to follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Fr. Josef Vollmer-Konig and Fr. John Libone for their loving and unwavering support. A special thank you to Nelson, Michelle, Meg, Nicole, Catherine, Deb and all at Faith Presbyterian Hospice and T. Boone Pickens Center who cared so lovingly for him in his final weeks and hours.
