Frederick Charles Koch, 73, of Garland, found peace as he joined his wife in the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, June 5, 2019. Fred was born March 27, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, to Samuel and Margaret Koch in a family that prided themselves on Hungarian traditions. He graduated from Cooley High School, where he forged lifelong friendships with his TO fraternity brothers. He went on to earn an associate's degree from Highland Park College. Fred loved the outdoors (especially discovering turtles and snakes on his many adventures), architecture, art, and history. He was an avid reader gifted with the ability to retain even the most insignificant of details, was a beautiful writer of short prose and poetry, and had an amazing wit capable of charming even the harshest of critics. In fall 1966, "on a cold dark night," Fred was introduced to Sally Byers. The two were married on February 14, 1970. They spent 50 years together as a couple before Sally was called home to Jesus in February 2017. He was her "Bear" and she was his "Pooh." In the late 1970s, Sally and Fred relocated to the Dallas area, which they called home until their deaths. In 1980, the two welcomed their daughter, Kathryn "Katy" Ann, whom they cherished. In 2010, Katy married David Brank, a man Fred greatly admired and loved to call his "son." In 2015 and again in 2017, Fred was made a grandfather. His family was his greatest pride and joy. He could regularly be found boasting to anyone who would listen about the latest exploits of his loved ones, especially his beloved grandchildren, "Bonnie Prince Charles" and "Queen Esther." Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Margaret, and two sisters, Carol Koshy and Genevieve Salvatore. He is survived by his daughter, Katy Brank, and her husband, David; two grandchildren, Charlie and Ebbie Brank; two brothers, Sam Cook and his wife, Diana, and Bill Koch and his wife, Jackie; a sister, Helen Driscoll, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2019, at Christ Church (4550 Legacy Drive in Plano, TX). Fred regularly served at Cornerstone Community Kitchen, a soup kitchen offering far more than food to the South Dallas community. The Kitchen is currently expanding its operations into a new facility. In lieu of flowers, the family plans to sponsor a set of Pots and Pans for use at the Kitchen's new facility in Fred's honor.
