Dorothy Louise Sanchez

Dorothy Louise Sanchez passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 31, 2019, surrounded by her family, just a few days shy of her 98th birthday. She was born February 5, 1921, at the American-run Peñoles mining camp in Durango, Mexico, to Louis Procissi, a mining engineer, and Dina Barsanti Procissi. Soon after her birth the family was transferred to Monterrey, Mexico. At the age of ten her father died and she left Mexico, along with her mother and two older sisters, for Flint, Michigan, where they had family. She graduated from St. Michael's High School in Flint in 1939 and continued her pursuit of a higher education by attending Flint College. She then went on to earn a Bachelors degree from Central Michigan University in 1943, majoring in both history and social science with minors in French and Spanish. While at CMU she was treasurer of her senior class, a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, a member of the Panhellenic Council, and she was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education. After graduation she moved to Washington, D.C. where she went to work for the U. S. Foreign Service during World War II. In the summer of 1944 she was one of only 14 women to board the USS General M. C. Meigs at Camp Patrick Henry in Newport News, Virginia, and they sailed for Naples, Italy, arriving there after General George Patton had completed the invasion of Sicily. The General Meigs had to make landfall in Naples under the cover of night since most of the mainland was still under Nazi control. While in Naples she served as a clerk in the U.S. Consulate and was there when the German army surrendered to the Allies at Casserta on May 2, 1945. Remaining with the Foreign Service after the war she took a post at the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey, Mexico, where she had grown up as a child. While in Monterrey she met her husband, Jim, whom she married on December 16, 1948. Soon thereafter they moved to Mexico City where they raised their three children. She taught 2nd and 3rd grade for 25 years at Greengates, a British school, and is remembered fondly by many of her former students. Dorothy was an active volunteer and enjoyed working with the blind. She was a member of the Junior League of Mexico City, and one of her favorite projects was the Comité Internacional Pro Ciegos, a school for the blind in Mexico City founded by the Junior League. Because of her volunteer work with the blind, in June of 1953 she had the great honor of meeting Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan who were visiting Mexico City. In the mid 1980's she moved to Guadalajara when her husband acquired an electric vehicle business there. She continued her volunteer work with the Junior League of Guadalajara as an advisor. In 2005 they moved to Dallas to retire and to be near their children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and father and two sisters, Estelle Sprauer and Florence Groom, both of Michigan. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Jaime Sanchez-Montealvo, her three children, Jimmy Sanchez and wife Diane, Bobby Sanchez and wife Gwen, and Susan Sanchez Murphy and husband Ed; three grandchildren, Rob Sanchez and wife Ellie, Alexis Martinez and husband Antonio, and Laura Arizmendi and husband Gabriel; six great-grandchildren, Nicolas, Carolina, Eva, Sofia, Benicio, and Camila; and many nieces and nephews. Following a rosary prayer service at 9:30 a.m., the funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 25, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9643 Ferndale Road in Dallas. Interment will be at the St. Joseph Columbarium, 600 S. Jupiter Road in Richardson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Foundation for the Blind, 1401 S. Clark St., Ste. 730, Arlington, VA 22202. http://www.afb.org
