Claude Thompson

Thompson, Claude, Jr., 77, of Dallas, passed away January 16, 2019, unexpectedly from a pulmonary embolism, concluding a full and satisfying life. He was born in Vicksburg, MS on March 23, 1941 to Claude Thompson, Sr. and Edna Cathleen Trucks Thompson. Claude was a member of the first class to graduate from H.V. Cooper High School in Vicksburg in 1958 and then served in the Navy from 1958 to 1962. After receiving an honorable discharge, Claude obtained a degree in Horticulture from Mississippi State University in 1967. After receiving his bachelor's degree, he worked briefly for the State of Texas in Austin, Texas. It was at this time that he met the love of his life, Dr. Frances Ann McBroom Thompson, who was working on her Masters at the University of Texas. They were married in Brownwood, Texas in 1967, and resided in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Claude worked for a private design firm and the City of Baton Rouge. Claude and Frances then moved to Georgia where Claude took graduate courses at Georgia Tech and worked for a private firm in Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and the City of Alma and Bacon County and where their first child was born. While expecting their second child, Claude and Frances moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1978, where Claude worked for a landscape architecture firm and where their second child was born. Throughout his subsequent career, Claude worked as a landscape architect and city planner for the cities of Dallas, Garland, Wylie, and Prosper. He was nationally known for his work on park designs, public pools, and the original DART light rail system, presenting frequently at state and national conferences, judging educational and professional competitions, and being published in professional journals, including the journal of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He held memberships in the American Society of Planning Officials, the American Planning Association, the American Institute of Planners, and was a charter member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He was especially active in the American Society of Landscape Architects, serving as co-chair of the DFW Section (1980-81), receiving an award for services to the Texas Chapter (1981), serving as President of the Texas Chapter in 1986, and as Trustee of the Texas Chapter from 1987 to 1990. In 1990, he was recognized by Mississippi State University as a "Visionary Pioneer" and first graduate upon the 25th anniversary of the university's landscape architecture program and in 1999 he received the Chapter Service Award in recognition of outstanding professional achievements from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. After his retirement, Claude taught as a Lecturer at the University of Texas at Arlington from (2007-2017) and internationally as a guest lecturer at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. Claude was a life-long supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, having earned his Eagle rank at the age of 15 and attended three National Jamborees. He was also an avid environmentalist, active in canoeing and hiking when younger and nature conservation and recycling programs until his death. Claude was a steadfast Christian, attending and serving as a deacon and elder at various Church of Christ congregations in Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas, including Saturn Road in Garland and White Rock in Dallas. He directed Christian youth activities and taught numerous Bible study classes through his local congregations, made multiple mission trips to Nigeria and Kenya, supported numerous preachers locally and mission efforts around the world and was a frequent contributor to a number of religious publications and periodicals, including the Magnolia Messenger, Gospel Advocate, and Christianity Today. He was also a trained instructor and presenter with New Life Behavior International. Claude was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Sr. and Kathleen Thompson of Vicksburg, MS, his brother Don Thompson of New Orleans, LA, and his beloved wife Frances. He is survived by his sons Landon Hayes Thompson and wife Shilo of Cisco, TX, and Brooks Caleb Thompson and wife Cony of Crandall, TX, grandsons Jonathan and Nicholas Thompson of Cisco, TX and Louis, Gabriel, and Dominique Perez and Alejandro Thompson of Crandall, TX, his sister Caroline Salassi of Zachary, LA, brother Gene Thompson and wife Emily of McComb, MS, nieces Donna Thompson and Gene Ann Thompson of New Orleans, LA, Claudia Sandman and husband Rich of Houston, TX, Debbie Salassi and partner Sandy Lemoine of Kenner, LA, nephew Wade and wife Lauren of Jackson, MS, and niece Betsy Sharpe and husband Jason of Kettrell, NC. Memorial gifts may be made to Brown Trail School of Preaching, Sunset International Bible Institute, the White Rock Fund, and the Boy Scouts of America. Memorial services will be February 16, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Saturn Road Church of Christ in Garland, Texas.
