Raymond Carlyle Burgy passed from this life on July 17, 2018, after a brief illness. He was born on October 11, 1946, in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated in 1964 from Maumee High School and soon joined the U.S. Navy, where he served on destroyers and traveled the world. Upon leaving the Navy in 1967, he married Gloria Nelsen in Maumee, Ohio, and they had two children. After a move to the Dallas, Texas, area in 1979 and a divorce, Ray met and married his second wife, Judith Ann Enix Sloan in 1981. They have lived in Mesquite since then. He briefly attended Eastfield College and also had a long career with building products companies, selling doors and mouldings to home builders. Ray was a member of the VFW, and his interests included family history, the Civil War, Dallas Stars hockey, birdwatching, and classical music. In recent years his health curtailed his activities, and he enjoyed watching old movies, especially those starring John Wayne. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Albert and Lucille Mulinix Burgy. He is survived by siblings Rick Burgy (Leigh), Tarry Burgy (Tess), Tyra Kirby, Kyle Burgy (M.J.), Kalden Burgy (Barbara), and Breck Burgy (Megan). He is also survived by his wife Judy and children Amy Covington (Tuck), Matthew Burgy (Moira), Sheridan Maphis (Robert), and Janet Sloan (Peter Stahl), and by 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Viewing and visitation will take place Saturday evening (July 21) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Eastgate Funeral Home in Garland, Texas (1910 Eastgate Drive). In lieu of flowers, please instead donate in Ray's memory to one of his favorite charities, American Battlefield Trust or the USO.
