Alfred Lurie

Alfred Lurie, 95, died on March 3, 2018 after a brief illness. He was born March 28, 1922 in Oak Park, Illinois to Albert and Rose Lurie.After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Harvard in 1943, he served as a Field Artillery Officer in WWII. He joined WBAP-TV, Fort Worth, shortly after the station signed on in 1948. Recalled to duty in the Korean War, he directed the official Department of Defense TV program "Pentagon-Washington" in 1951-1952. He returned to the Dallas area and spent the rest of his career at Bloom Advertising and radio station management for Gordon McLendon. He was Sales Manager and then General Manager of KLIF Dallas from 1958 to 1975. He continued his broadcasting career at radio stations KRLD and KMEZ until he retired in 1988.He was President of the Association of Broadcasting Executives of Texas in 1967-68. In 2003, he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. He was active in Harvard Alumni affairs and served as President of the Harvard Club of Dallas from 1962-63. He did Schools Committee work for Harvard for over 40 years and was still active until a few years before his death. His hobbies included bridge, reading, and golf and he enjoyed mentoring many broadcasting executives.Mr. Lurie is survived by his wife Shirley, daughters Carol Lurie, Elizabeth Lurie Irwin (Myron), Marcia Lurie Curtis (William) and Jean Pauling Kenney (Greg); grandchildren Jaime O'Brien (Patrick), Chris Irwin (Mia), Evan Curtis (Cathy), Megan Olsen (Carl), Kane Kenney, Griffin Kenney, Stephen Novak and Michael Novak, and son-in-law Mike Kimbrell; great-granddaughters Lily and Abby O'Brien, Kate and Christine Curtis, and Florence Olsen, and niece Elisabeth von Sachse (Stephan). Mr. Lurie was predeceased by his parents, brother Ade, ex-wife Rosemary Andrews Lurie and step-daughter Kay Kimbrell.At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
