Abraham M. Mathai, lovingly known as Kunjumon, was born on July 9, 1939,
in Ranni, Kerala, India, to the late Mathai Gevarghese and Annamma
Mathai. He was the third of eight children in his family. After completing
high school, he moved to Bhopal, where he worked as a Stenographer-typist
in the government veterinary office.
On April 17, 1969, Kunjumon married Saramma in Bhopal. Together, they
built a home founded on faith, love, hard work, and unwavering devotion to
the Lord. They were blessed with four children: Matthew, Betty, Sam, and
Bensey.
On March 30, 1977, Kunjumon immigrated to the US with his family and
made Philadelphia, PA, their home. He joined Eben-Ezer Church of God,
where he was an active and faithful member for more than 40 years.
Kunjumon was known in the community as a humble, honest, and
hardworking man with a remarkable ability to build and create. He enjoyed
gardening, farming, tailoring, and carpentry. His practical wisdom and
generous heart made him someone that many friends turned to for advice
and help.
In 2019, Kunjumon began experiencing memory loss and dementia, which
eventually progressed to Alzheimer's disease. Although he faced many
challenges of this debilitating disease, the love and care from his family
carried him through.
In June 2025, Kunjumon and Saramma moved to Sunnyvale, TX, to live with
their daughter Betty and her family, where he was lovingly cared for during
the final months of his life.
On June 17, 2026, surrounded by his family, Kunjumon peacefully went
home to be with the Lord. We rejoice in the blessed hope that he is now in
the presence of his Savior, where there is no pain, suffering, or sorrow.
Kunjumon is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Saramma; children
Matthew (Bincy), Betty (Sunny), Sam (Sharon), and Bensey (Sinu);
grandchildren Stephen (Joann), Boaz, Sarah, Alyssa, Cianna, Ashton, Emma,
Levi, and Elijah; and great-granddaughter Simone. He is also survived by his
siblings Mrs. M.M. Thankamma, Mr. M.M. Thomas, Mr. M.M. Babykutty,
and Mr. M.M. Johneykutty. He was preceded in death by his beloved
parents and his siblings, Mr. M.M. Varughese, Mrs. M.M. Mariamma, and
Mrs. M.M. Sosamma.
Kunjumon leaves behind a lasting legacy of selfless love, integrity, and
devotion to God and family.
