Grady Elmore Bass

Grady Bass had been in failing health for several months and passed on Tuesday, March 10th. I asked several friends to say something about their friendship over the years to be posted here. Grady's friend Allan Assef wrote: I met Grady over 50 Years ago, He came to Cheraw,SC. as the manager of Rider Tank Lines trucking Co. We met and became friends and most of Cheraw people did also.Big occasions were things like Darlington,SC. Race Way, (weekend parties) with large groups of friends. We all were all friends and Buddies. Grady will be missed Grady's daughter wrote – he was raised in Sedley, Virginia and graduated from Courtland High School. Played baseball in high school; loved fishing. Active in the Franklin Jaycees in the mid-fifties Mike and Carol Harsha wrote -- My wife & I met Grady in the summer of 1980, after just moving to AR from IA at the Overbrook Apts. pool & became immediate friends, eventually calling each other "brother." We have constantly been in touch throughout the years. And in memory of a special brother: "Today is full of memories of a brother laid to rest and every single one of them is filled with happiness. For you were someone special always such a joy to know and there was so much pain when it was time to let you go that's why this special message is sent to heaven above for the angels to take care of you and give you all my love. " Mike & Carol Harsha Judy Lewis, his partner of 35 years met Grady at a dinner dance at the Republic Bank given by the Desk and Derrick club of Dallas. He asked to be seated next to me and we danced to the big band music, and the rest is history. Over the next 35 years we traveled owned 8 different motor homes and traveled all 48 states and parts of Canada. Grady never met a stranger and we learned about some of the most interesting places as he talked with other travelers. He knew everyone from the manager at the Dollar Tree to all of the neighbors on the block, he was a friend to all. We will miss him dearly. Grady is survived by his daughter, Bettie Mitchell, sister, Helen Sledge, nephews, Buffy Long and Jodie Sledge, and grand-nephews Taylor Sledge and Jamie Long. Also, his stepsons James Lewis and David Lewis, and step grandsons Blake Lewis, Hunter Lewis, Claire Lewis and Dylan Lewis. His wish is that, if you so desire, make a donation to St Jude Research Hospital located at P O Box 11000, Dept 142 Memphis, TN 38148, or https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html, he visited there and donated his extensive ball cap collection to the children who had lost their hair while under-going cancer treatment. We will have an outdoor memorial later in the spring in nice weather for an outside memorial, if you send your email to jlewis01a@gmail.com, I will notify of the date, place and time.
