Kay Ellen Kirby Horne

Kay Ellen Kirby Horne was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on August
9th, 1947 to parents Gardner H and Beatrice Mae Kirby. She loved music
and began singing in choir at age three and continued to sing in choirs for
the rest of her life. Kay graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1965
and then graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas in
1969. As a lifetime learner she continued her studies and earned a
Master’s Degree in Counseling from North Texas State University. She met
Larry Horne on a blind date and they were married in 1971. They have two
sons - Travis and Steven.
Kay began working in the Mesquite Independent School District
teaching 1st and 2nd grade. She later became a librarian and then a
Computer Specialist teaching teachers to use computers in the classroom.
Kay retired after nearly forty years in the Mesquite Independent School
District.
Kay was involved in many ways with New World United Methodist
church of Garland, Texas. Kay served on numerous committees, sang in
the choir, played in the bell choir, helped in the nursery just to name a few.
She was also very involved with a bible study group known as the “Bible
Babes”.
Above all Kay loved children. Kay was involved in Cub Scouts acting
as a Den Leader. She worked with the children of New World United
Methodist Church in Garland, Texas as Sunday School teacher, children’s
choir director, helped and lead VBS, worked with the youth and helped
chaperone many youth trips around the country. Kay loved following the
lives and activities of her grandchildren.
She is survived by Larry Horne, her husband of 53 years; her son
Travis and his wife Renee; Steven and his wife Autumn; and her pride and
joy: grandsons Castyn, Kian and Kole Josiah (KJ). Her sister Frances
Elmore and her niece Deena Davidson. Her sister-in-law Carolyn Boucher
and nephews Cameron and Michael Boucher.
She was preceded in death by her parents Gardner H and Beatrice
Mae Kirby.
